In the last ten years women have been breaking records and reaching new heights in sports more than they ever have previously. It can be attributed to a number of different factors but probably the most important factor is the sports psychology that has enabled women to achieve more.

Women generally have a different approach when it comes to performance in athletics or extreme sports, they also have a slightly different attitude to competition and achievement. The result is that the gender difference when it comes to the mental game are just as important as the obvious physical differences.

Some women mistakenly believe that mental toughness is a male attribute that needs to be copied however this is not true at all. For a male the ability to go through pain would be considered mental toughness but for a women mental toughness is the ability to adapt to changing circumstances when competing and adapting by removing self-doubt, negative emotions or thoughts.

Top female athletes have taught themselves to manage all external distractions and focus at the task at hand when competing. This comes from a dedicated practice of learning to focus when doing a sport so that you can do the best that you can do without getting distracted from ANY external event that might be happening.

Sports psychology also adds internal distractions that need to be managed when it comes to women competitors. Judging yourself too harshly will have drastic consequences. Saying that you should be better prepared just takes up too much energy and will affect performance so it needs to be taken care of.

In a study done in Sports Psychology it was shown that in behavioural investigations all women value the importance of relationships as well as interpersonal dynamics a lot more than men do. Managing your support network in order to stay centred when you compete should mean that you have very clear understandings of any boundaries or separation required when competing.

Note: The best book on developing a winning mental outlook is Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard, you can get it by going to http://www.dianetics.org/#/bookstore.
